post_03Cameron highlands has a rich bio-diversity inhabited by a wide variety of flora and fauna endemic to the montane rainforest…… It is home to hundreds of varieties of plants herbaceous, medicinal and even ornamentals…… While pitcher plants line the paths on a lot of trails…. Among the ornamentals…. 600++ varieties of orchids have already been documented in our highlands….. Infact 30-40 varieties of orchids mark our trails easily accessible on nature walks, for example  coelogyne, corybus etc.

We have an abundance of birds that exist in the wild here. Infact Gunung Jasar is an international birding area…. Commonly found endemic species are Mountain Peacock Pheasant and Mesia among others.

After a rainy spell our forest is a bloom with a wide variety of fungi and there are upto to 100 species in our forest alone. You can see them sprouting from tree trunks and covering the ground in all kinds of colours from grey to vivid greens and orange.

Among the animals that one is likely to encounter here are sunbears, civet cats, among others…..also one cannot miss the ‘plethora of beetles, butterflies and other insects one can see here..(although with all the environmental damage and pesticide abuse that’s taking place in the farms around us we are seeing more   flies than butterflies and the other creatures)besides getting rid of the pests, we have cleaned our gardens of a variety of insects and worms …

post_07On a more positive note, cyberfriends, there are certain things which wont change…Like My garden in the camerons, which is in Eternal Bloom. All one needs to do over here is plant a few flowering varieties, and you can see without much care everything just comes alive … As you drive around in Camerons and even on your way up without entering the jungle, you can see orchids …growing along or near the roadside…some species are endemic like the Arundinhas particularly on the Simpang Pulai Kampung Raja stretch…on one such trip to and from KL just as I was passing the beautiful trees On either sides of the rolling hills – I paused and took a moment to look around….I was amazed at some of the trees which were in bloom.. I stopped and took some pictures. Later, I asked my friend Ruwaida (a former MARDI researcher). I am sharing some of the pictures with you with their names and common names… and with whatever information I could gather.

These pictures were taken at the end of February when the whole country was scorching from the dry spell. As if defying the natural elements.Camerons was in Bloom –that’s why I call it the land of eternal spring. The images of the flowers that I have put up are commonly growing all around us. On the road sides, creeping on peoples wall and some are from my own backyard.

If you are a visitor in camerons do not miss the opportunity to visit the MARDI AGRO TOURISM PARK..…A beautifully laid out garden with plenty of varieties of plants and flowers both endemic and some imported varieties as well..A treat to a jaded mind and tired eyes..see you in Cameron highlands cyberfriends …remember take all the pictures you can but don’t carry the plants back as souvenirs …ha ha ..jokes apart a common sight in the camerons..on that note I will leave you till we meet again in cyberspace ..Cheers!!
