Reflections 2014
HELLO CYBERFRIENDS!!!.We meet after a long break…I would like to wish everyone the very best for 2015..As we welcome another year its also a time to reflect on the year gone by, the lessons learnt from past mistakes and focus on our hopes and aspirations for the new year..
2014 was a hard year for Malaysians ..To begin with the tragedies of MH 370 and MH 17..Then the last few months were marred by flooding and landslides in Cameron Highlands in which 5 people lost their lives..In the wake of this calamity, the whole nation saw through media reports and images the shocking extent of the illegal land clearing in our beautiful hill resort…The flooding which started in the hills soon gripped the eastern states as the monsoon gained momentum, causing huge damages, rendering people homeless and leaving behind a trail of destruction … It was one of the worst floods in the nation’s history.
This was indeed a wake up call for all Malaysians. As the whole nation analyses, debates and dissects the cause of the floods, the message couldn’t be more clear..Floods and landslides are the signs of an ailing ecosystem, a cry for help from mother nature..
Most of the river systems start in the highlands, indiscriminate land clearing has resulted in the rivers being heavily silted . Deforestation and mismanagement of hill slope development triggered by greed and corruption has led to the devastation of everything downstream and made vulnerable states like Kelantan and Pahang even more prone to severe flooding..
Time has come for us to stop playing the blame game and focus on the issues that confront us..State governments which are responsible for land use must not trade in our forests for short term gains through state sanctioned logging and land clearing activities ..The recent floods will cost the nation billions of ringgits before normalcy can be restored..
We welcome the announcement by the Selangor Mentri Besar that the state government, has come up with measures to ensure that development projects in the state do not jeopardize the ecosystem and harm the environment..
The need of the hour is to put aside political differences and for both the state and federal governments to work together to solve the issues of illegal logging, encroachment of our forest reserves and indiscriminate land clearing activities..A precedent must be set by imposing harsh penalties and punishment should be given out to the environmental bandits responsible for robbing us of our natural resources and changing the geography of our land..
AS A NATION AND AS CONCERNED CITIZENS ITS OUR DUTY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSE.WE SHALL BE BOLD IN VOICING OUR OPINIONS..WE WILL NOT WAIT FOR THE LAST TREE TO BE CUT OR THE LAST RIVER TO BE POISONED OR SILTED COMPLETELY..NIETHER SHALL WE WAIT FOR MORE LANDSLIDES TO HAPPEN AND TAKE AWAY PRECIOUS LIVES .
